Schleswig-Holstein, a German state, is moving tens of thousands of government workstations to Linux and open-source office software. Denmark's Ministry of Digitalisation announced it's phasing out Microsoft's operating system and office suite. France's Gendarmerie has run its own Ubuntu derivative on the bulk of its machines for years. India ships a hardened Linux for its defense ministry. China has been pushing government offices onto domestic Linux distributions as a matter of national policy.
The stated reason is usually cost or licensing. The real reason is sovereignty. When your entire administrative state runs on software controlled by a foreign company — priced in someone else's currency, updated on someone else's schedule, with data flowing through someone else's cloud — that's not a procurement detail. It's a dependency. And governments have decided they want out.
Add Valve to the picture — the Steam Deck made Linux a consumer gaming platform, and Proton quietly solved two decades of "but my games don't run" — and the desktop Linux user is no longer just a sysadmin with strong opinions. It's a civil servant in Kiel, a student with a Steam Deck dock, a developer who never left. The audience is here, and it's growing.
The Software Gap
Here's the problem: the software didn't come with them.
Linux has never lacked capable software. It has world-class engines — Blender, DaVinci Resolve, the entire server-side universe. The bar isn't feature count. Linux tools usually win on feature count. The bar is:
- Designed user experiences. Someone thought about the first five minutes, not just the five-hundredth hour. The interface has a point of view.
- A reduction in verbosity. Opinionated defaults instead of a settings labyrinth. The tool decides the things a professional would decide, and hides the knobs ninety-five percent of users will never turn — without deleting them for the five percent who will.
- Native performance. Built for the hardware, not shipped in a browser. GPU-first where it matters, instant where it counts.
- Finished, not just functional. Padding, motion, sound, the small physics of a tool that feels good — the stuff traditionally dismissed on Linux as cosmetic, which is precisely the stuff people pay for.
For decades, that combination was reserved for macOS and Windows because that's where the paying customers were. That excuse is expiring.
