Valve Vive VR Launch

Experimental VR photography, photogrammetry, and skybox building for Valve's inaugural Vive virtual reality headset launch — helping define what immersive VR environments could look like.

Client

Valve Corporation / HTC

Year

2016

The Challenge

Valve was launching the HTC Vive — one of the first room-scale VR headsets — and needed to push the boundaries of what VR environments could look and feel like. This meant inventing new techniques for capturing and rendering real-world environments in virtual reality, where every visual shortcut is immediately obvious because the viewer is inside the scene.

Our Solution

Will contributed experimental VR photography techniques, photogrammetry workflows for capturing real-world environments as 3D assets, and skybox building for VR in Unity. The work helped establish visual benchmarks for what immersive VR content could achieve at the dawn of consumer virtual reality.
